Natural beauty: The Benefits of Oil Pulling

Namaste!,

Since I received so much positive feedback from my last Natural Beauty post, The Benefits of Coconut Oil (link down below), I decided to continue to post more healthy, transformational tips.

A few months ago, I heard the term oil pulling and that it had various benefits. My first question was, What exactly is oil pulling?

I thought it had to do something with hair, like pulling natural oils out of your hair or something but I was completely wrong. Oil pulling is actually, by definition:

“An ancient Ayurvedic remedy for oral health and detoxification. It involves the use of pure oils as agents for pulling harmful bacteria, fungus, and other organisms out of the mouth, teeth, gums and even throat”.

In other words, swishing around purified oils in your mouth can naturally clear away unwanted toxins out of the body, safely and effectively.

Steps for Oil Pulling:

1.) To oil pull, simply choose your pure oil. The preferred remedy oil for many is sesame oil although you can also use coconut, olive or sunflower oils.

2.) It is best to oil pull in the morning, before breakfast. It is important to first drink a full glass of water before you start this process as it will help move the oil around your mouth.

3.) Now all you have to do is take a spoonful of the oil and swish it around for at least 5 minutes. This is the tricky part that might take a little while to get used to. I’m not going to pretend it’s the most comfortable thing, but it’s really not that bad.

The key is to keep swishing constantly! The ideal time to swish is 20 minutes. I can normally do this while putting on my makeup for the day to keep me occupied. Oh! and try not to swallow the oil, that will defeat the purpose of elminating the toxins.

Benefits to Oil Pulling:

Just like most natural remedies, the benefits are pretty much endless. Here is a list of just some of the benefits scientifically studied to come from this practice:

-whitens teeth

-strengthens teeth, gums & jaw

-prevents disease

-prevents bad breath

-increases overall oral health

-reduces insomnia

-detoxifies body

-relieves hangovers

-supports kidney function

-headache reliever

The benefits that arise from just putting a little oil in your mouth seem pretty unbelievable, but start believing because it really does all these remarkable things.

Additionally, here is something to think about: Fluoride found in toothpaste and mouthwash is incredibly harmful to your mouth tissue overtime, as well as your overall oral health. With that being said, I have found oil pulling is the best alternative to such an evasive chemical.

Note: I like to use toothpaste without fluoride, Tom’s organic brand (found in most stores) has a great natural toothpaste that I would strongly recommend!
